Employer Premium Compliance

Employer ComplianceAn in-house premium compliance programme was introduced early in 2006 to ensure equity and fairness across the scheme.

The programme recognises that there are often complex facets of premium and that employers focusing on their own business may not be fully aware of all factors relevant to calculation of their premium or may lose knowledge and expertise through turnover of staff.

The compliance programme ensures that employers pay their fair share of premium and assists them to better understand their premium obligations.

Employer Self Assessment

A self assessment process has been introduced which provides employers the opportunity to voluntarily disclose potential non-compliance thereby avoiding non-disclosure penalties. Employers are mostly selected for self assessment on a random basis with a focus on small employers.

The self assessment process requires employers to complete a questionnaire on the aspects of their business that are relevant to their premium calculation.

The self assessment process is supported by the Employer Self Assessment Booklet that explains the process and the requirements of the questionnaire.

Compliance Audit

Premium compliance audits are more focused and robust aimed at the identification of those employers who deliberately avoid their premium obligations. WorkSafe’s compliance auditors frequently visit employer’s premises to examine documentation, review workplace activities and assist employers during the audit process.

Premium Compliance normally contact over 2000 Victorian employers to undertake self assessments or compliance audits each year resulting in premium adjustments of around $10 million.

If you have information in relation to an employer you suspect is not meeting their obligations in relation to the fair and equitable payment of premium please contact WorkSafe Premium Compliance on premium_information@worksafe.vic.gov.au or telephone (03) 9641 1206.
